Dwell Time

The duration an inventory unit, order, or vehicle spends in a specific warehouse zone without value-adding processing activity.

Dwell time measures idle residence - inventory sitting in receiving before putaway, cartons queued before packing, trailers at docks awaiting unloading. Unlike throughput metrics that measure productive activity, dwell time captures inactivity and queue accumulation. Elevated dwell time in any zone indicates a downstream bottleneck or upstream imbalance that is creating work-in-progress inventory. In high-velocity fulfillment operations, dwell time is a leading indicator of throughput problems before they manifest as missed service levels. For automation deployments, unexpected dwell time in zones adjacent to automated systems often reveals integration failures - the automation is not receiving or dispatching work at the rate the surrounding manual workflow expects. Dwell time measurement is a diagnostic tool for workflow constraint identification.
