The structural tension when a single DC simultaneously handles case-level store replenishment and each-level DTC ecommerce, creating mutually incompatible automation design requirements.
Omnichannel workflow conflict describes the operational engineering problem that emerges when a single distribution center is required to fulfill both bulk store replenishment (case or pallet-level picks for retail stores) and direct-to-consumer e-commerce orders (individual unit picks with consumer-grade packaging). These two workflows have fundamentally different automation requirements: store replenishment favors pallet handling equipment, case-pick automation, and high-weight conveyance; DTC fulfillment favors each-pick robotics, individual item sortation, and parcel processing. A facility designed to optimize one workflow performs poorly at the other. Automation systems selected for store replenishment economics - where labor intensity per unit is low - will not generate ROI when applied to DTC workflows, and vice versa. The conflict is compounded when peak demand for each channel occurs at different times, creating competing resource claims on shared automation infrastructure. Resolving omnichannel workflow conflict typically requires either channel separation or deliberate architectural trade-offs with explicit performance penalties accepted for one channel.
